The Miami Herald | 09/12/2002 | Text of President Bush’s speech to the United Nations on Iraq

We know that Saddam Hussein pursued weapons of mass murder even when inspectors were in the country. Are we to assume that he stopped when they left? The history, the logic and the facts lead to one conclusion. Saddam Hussein’s regime is a grave and gathering danger. To suggest otherwise is to hope against the evidence. To assume this regime’s good faith is to bet the lives of millions and the peace of the world in a reckless gamble. And this is a risk we must not take.

Listen, I have a lot of problems with this administration. And I think a lot of the reason they’re pushing war with Iraq is to rescue GHWB’s legacy. And they’re taking advantage of 9-11 to pursue Saddam, who was tangentially involved at most.

That doesn’t mean that they’re wrong. We will have to fight Saddam. Maybe now, maybe later. But we will have to fight, and I would rather do it before he has nuclear weapons.

CNN.com – The illegal drug khat showing up in the U.S. – September 12, 2002

First, let’s hear it for the drug warriors!

Khat has been illegal since 1993 in the United States. According to the Drug Enforcement Administration, chronic use can cause violence and suicidal depression similar to amphetamine addiction, though the agency said it was unaware of any examples.

“We don’t know of anything actually happening, but we’re sure it’s bad!” And now, how about a hand for its advocates:

“What coffee is to Americans is what khat is for Somalis,” said Omar Jamal, executive manager of the Somali Justice Advocacy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota. “The whole thing about khat being addictive is very strange for Somalis. It’s a completely different frame of thinking.”

“I mean, nobody was ever addicted to coffee, right?”

Khat (the first time I heard of it they spelled it qat — I think we should push that spelling for Scrabble reasons) contains cathinone, which is similar to amphetamines. It’s really not a big deal. Admittedly, it’s gross, but no grosser than chewing tobacco.

Every weekend is a three-day weekend in Midland, Louisiana! And in school districts in five other states. If nothing else, it will be a boon for the daycare industry.
