Bill would require PE in all four years of high school in Alabama- al.com

Saying that “Alabama is one of the most obese states in the nation,” Tuscaloosa Rep Ken Guin wants to make schools up PE requirements — from 150 minutes a week to 200 in elementary schools, and to 225 minutes a week in middle and high schools. Currently, high school students only have to take one year of PE. It would cost a ton of money and take time away from actual, you know, studying. Well, I guess that when we’re all cleaning homes for the Chinese we’ll at least be in good shape for it.

When my kids were in elementary school, they spent a lot of their PE time sitting on the bleachers in “timeout” because the entire class had failed to keep silent while the teacher, I mean, educator, gave instruction for that day’s activity. No, they didn’t run laps—they sat. That was when it wasn’t raining, of course. On rainy days they stayed in the classroom and played “Doggie, Doggie, Where’s Your Bone” or other games consisting largely of sitting, because there was no covered area for them to play. This is in Mobile, the city that gets more rainfall than any other in the lower 48.

Maybe Ken Guin should visit a few schools before he goes any further with this.

They’re going to have to lengthen the school day and the school year to cram all the stuff in that they want kids to do. And who’s going to pay for that? Nobody… So it’s pretty obvious it’ll never happen.
