Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford to ask council to move forward on free bus service- al.com
A majority of the council is now indicating that they won’t support Larry’s Free Bus Summer Jamboree. However, I must question their intelligence:
Council President Carole Smitherman and council members Steven Hoyt, Maxine Parker, Valerie Abbott and Carol Duncan questioned the fiscal responsibility of the plan that totaled $863,000.
“We were not given full information,” Smitherman said. “Had they communicated with us, we wouldn’t ever have been in this position.”
What did they think the situation was? Did they think Larry found a million dollars under the cushions? (Actually, that would explain where the money for a lot of different things comes from.) Did they think that the bus authority had found a way to make the buses run on air, and that the drivers liked their jobs so much they’d work for free?
More likely, they’ve been emboldened by this SEC thing and are at last doing their jobs.
Also, BMLL wants to give Children’s Hospital $20 million in tax breaks to build an expansion. Because Children’s isn’t loaded enough as it is.
