Birmingham City Council to reconsider taking money from school sidewalks to give for Fair Park upgrades- al.com

Roderick Royal, one of the more consistently anti-Crazy Larry voices on the Council, is trying to get his colleagues to reverse their decision to take money targeted for sidewalk repairs in front of schools and instead use it on Larry’s wacko “Olympic Village” thing at Five Points West. I think it was the epidemic of broken backs among mothers that did it.

Anyway, Royal points to a lawyer’s note that says that money from a bond issue can’t be used for anything but education. BMLL was too busy painting “Homos Go Home” on a banner to talk to the newspaper, but his mouthpiece said that the schools could use the swimming pools and track at the Village so it’s educational. It seems to me that under that standard, anything could be educational, and therefore the standard becomes worthless.

Langford says he will not stop gay pride parade - Breaking News from The Birmingham News - al.com

He still won’t sign the proclamation, and apparently won’t allow banners on city property — two things that past mayors have done. That’s because he’s a bigot. At least he isn’t breaking out the firehoses.

Birmingham mayor denies gay parade permit- al.com

BMLL won’t sign the proclamation declaring Gay Pride Day, or issue a permit for the parade. This is just simple bigotry. He doesn’t even deny it.

In addition, Langford said anyone familiar with his personality and religious views should not be surprised by the denial.

“I’m not going to endorse, condone or condemn anybody,” he said. “I’m just not going to sign the proclamation.”

Of course, he says he’s “not intolerant”, but obviously, he is. This isn’t a new thing; the gay pride parade in Birmingham has been going on since 1989, and Arrington and Kincaid signed the proclamations and issued the permits. This isn’t about politics, it’s about Langford’s own bigotry.

Just to make clear: Larry Langford is a Christianist bigot and the spiritual heir of Bull Connor. That is all.

Discovery Channel Mythbusters slate performance- al.com

From one of those “briefs” columns:

Girls fast-pitch softball sought

Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford said Wednesday he wants to bring a girls fast-pitch softball facility to Birmingham and also bid on having a youth baseball championship series held here.

“We can have the same amenities other states have,” he told reporters after a breakfast meeting with the Birmingham school board where he mentioned the idea.

Tremendous scholarships are available for girls involved in fast-pitch, Langford said. Langford added that he expected his idea to be met with criticism “because that’s just the nature of this community.

“But I’m still going to actively pursue having it here,” he said.

That’s the latest part of the solution: Fast-pitch softball! He’s got a million of them, folks!

Mayor proposes more laptops for high schools - Breaking News from The Birmingham News - al.com

He’s not talking about handing the laptops out. He’s talking about “portable labs” attached to the high schools. Which will have computers that happen to be extremely, well, portable. So, how long will this initiative last? Head on down to the pawn shop for further details.

Police seek man who walked out of Bryce | TuscaloosaNews.com

Well, at least they told us this time.

He is described as 5’7,” 122 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a burgundy shirt and camouflage shorts. Police say he was at Bryce on a Jefferson County court order and should be considered a danger to the community.

So basically, crazy people who have been locked up by the courts can just stroll off from the mental institution and nobody there stops them. This is at least the third time it’s happened in the last five years, once with an actual convicted murderer. Did I mention that Bryce is right next to the University campus?

Riley asks churches to aid newly released inmates- al.com

Leaders from churches and charitable groups were asked to provide a wide range of services to former inmates, including employment assistance, housing, clothing, health care and cash.

I mean, the state won’t do it, and we aren’t going to get employers to hire these guys, so let’s have the religious people do it instead. They love that Christian charity crap.

Mayor Langford presents budget, says fiscal restraint needed- al.com

Fiscal restraint is apparently needed, which is why BMLL offered a budget with only a 31 percent spending increase. It’s the usual stuff — the Birmingdome, Fair Park, mass transit. I like the mass transit.
