Unfunded mandates, local-style

Bill aims for dome money

State Rep John Rogers, upset with the Jefferson County Commission for some reason, has gotten a bill through committee that would require the county to support a domed stadium in downtown Birmingham through 2038. Rogers really wants a dome, and for some reason really doesn’t want big money for public transportation. (I’m not sure why; Rogers’ constituency is basically your public transportation voter — poor, black, and urban.) Anyway, if this passes the legislature (I think it will) and Riley signs it (that might be the roadblock) the county will be stuck paying for a dome it might not want. And heck, in thirty years they’ll probably want an underwater stadium or something.

  1. There will never be a domed stadium in Birmingham – Birmingham is a city of perpetual losers that takes 5 steps back before taking a step forward. There is more likely to be a domed stadium in tupelo, mississippi than Birmingham.. no matter what anyone says. They’ve been lying about this for 7 years.
