There’s no such thing as a free bus

Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford proposes four months of free bus rides- al.com

It will cost the city over three-quarters of a million dollars to run these bus routes. Okay, that’s the cost. However, they won’t be bringing in any money. I really don’t get this. Things cost money. That’s how it works.

  1. I’m willing to bet that ridership doesn’t increase a whole lot, even if it’s free.

  2. “‘With gas prices going up the way they are, we need to give the people in this city a break,’ Langford said.”

His math’s off somewhere. “With gas prices going up…” For a city so financially hyperextended, you’d think that sentence would end with “it’s hardly the time to give free rides.”

From what I hear, it’s the unpredictability of schedules, not the fares, that’s keeping the seats empty.
