Well, that’s unusual

Man who drowned in East Lake Park was ex-Navy Seal – Breaking News from The Birmingham News – al.com

Navy Seals do lots of things, of course, but I’m pretty sure all of them are good at the swimming.

  1. My goodness, but the comment thread on that article is interesting.

  2. Not sure if this was added to the article after your post, but it says this: “Family members told the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office that Ambers had been a U.S. Navy Seal. However, this evening the U.S. Navy’s Special Warfare Command issued a statement saying it had no record of Ambers entering the Seal program.” Chances are, the guy told his family he went to BUDS, but he was probably full of crap. There is a whole subculture of fakers out there. Just last year when I was in Orlando a cashier at a fudge shop claimed to have been a “combat photographer” in Afghanistan. I vetted him with 3 simple questions and came to the conclusion that he was being completely full of it. I even told him so. They are everywhere.

  3. I’m sure the commenters insisting that the 2:30 a.m. fisherman murdered the guy will now say that of course the Navy can’t admit he was in the program, it was a SECRET.

I read somewhere recently that society only functions because we assume that everyone is , mostly, truthful. People who are willing to lie constantly have a tremendous advantage, at least in the short run. Unless they get hooked on cocaine, of course.

  5. I know one guy who faked his story as a SEAL for his whole life. Turns out he was in jail.
