UA, UAB, UAH to raise tuition, cut positions – Breaking News from The Birmingham News – al.com

Alabama won’t have to make cuts in their crack Road Destruction, Parking Elimination, and Oppressively Huge Building Construction divisions. So they’ve got that going for them.

Sooner or later…

Oklahoma company acquires Alabama Adventure – Business News from The Birmingham News – al.com

So, let’s check in on a past Wacky Scheme, the Wacky Scheme that made Larry Langford, “Visionland”, the peculiar idea he had as mayor of Fairfield that what western Jefferson County really needed was an amusement park built at public expense.

So, how’s that going? Well, the name’s been changed to “Alabama Adventure”, which is a bad name but probably better than “Visionland”. The municipalities which paid for Visionland wound up dumping the park on a private company in 2003, which now has dumped the park on some Oklahomans who used to work for Six Flags. They kept land around the park, however, which is probably what they were interested in all along.

So, it’s going about as well as possibly could be expected. The cities took a huge bath on the fiasco, but Crazy Larry escaped unharmed, off to Do Something first for Jefferson County and now Birmingham.

I don’t know much about God

Tired of paying through the nose, Americans try praying at the pump – Yahoo! News

But I am fairly certain that He doesn’t perform miracles in order to bring down gas prices.

“Prayer is the answer to every problem in life… We call on God to intervene in the lives of the selfish, greedy people who are keeping these prices high,” Twyman said on the gas station forecourt in a neighborhood of Washington that, like many of its residents, has seen better days.

Furthermore, I am pretty certain that a just God would smite people who do things like this. This combination of selfishness and cluelessness is just the sort of thing that needs a good smiting.

World economy slowing, U.S. near recession – IMF – Apr. 9, 2008

Shut it, jerks

Independent truckers talk of strike, slowdowns today to protest fuel prices- al.com

Okay, I pride myself on being a relatively enlightened person, but there are certain people I can’t stand: George Bush, and truckers. They’re incredibly self-entitled, they act like they own the road, and now they’re whining because diesel prices are high. As if everyone else wasn’t paying more for fuel. And what are they going to do about it?

Some media outlets have reported that truckers will stage a “slowdown,” traveling side-by-side and delaying motorists.

Yes, they’re going to fuck with everyone else for no good reason! (And they did it, too.) This is sure to get people on their side! Where were these people trained, France?

Just in case my point wasn’t clear: Truckers, I hate you, and I hope you starve.

So that’s all taken care of, I guess

Jefferson County, Alabama narrowly avoids bond default- al.com

With the Commission’s Supreme Leader Bettye Fine Collins mysteriously absent, the two white guys voted to give the banks $4 million as an interest-only payment on the debt. Shelia Smoot (Smoot!) voted no, and the temp abstained. The county apparently has forbearance agreements with the banks, just like me and my student loans. I can tell you, that really worked out great. You really don’t want to pay down the principal if you can avoid it. Right?

They probably won’t be kneecapped, but you can never be sure

Jefferson County officials seek delay in debt payment- al.com

On their way down to the pawn shop to see what they can get for a courthouse and two middle schools, the Jefferson County Commission left word for the banks that they don’t have the money yet, but they’ll totally have it in a few weeks, so please be patient. The banks are really in a forgiving mood right now, I’m sure.
